“Mac”, Gaelic for “Son”, is the most common element of Scottish and Irish surnames. “Mac” is often abbreviated to “Mc” in both Scotland and Ireland.
There is absolutely no truth to the North American myth that “Mac” is Scottish and Mc” is Irish.
